The Wood Ear mushroom (Auricularia auricula-judae) is one of the oldest cultivated mushrooms in Asia, with documented use since the Tang Dynasty.
Its name — “Wood Ear” — reflects its ear-like form on decaying wood. In Chinese it is Hei Mu Er (Black Ear on the wood); the white, unrelated “Snow Fungus” is Bai Mu Er (White Ear on the wood).

Wood Ear is a widely distributed mushroom found in temperate and subtropical forests across the globe. Extensively cultivated and valued in cuisine for its slightly crunchy texture.
