CONSERVATION IN BALANCE
Balance Healthcare Sponsors RCHM Herb Garden
Balance Healthcare has been an active sponsor of The Chinese Herb Garden at the University of Bristol Botanic Gardens. This is a joint programme with the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM) with links in China.

This report is to update readers with the contribution made by Balance Healthcare during 2005.

At the start of the year, we sponsored the production of the Conservation Newsletter by the garden. 1500 copies were distributed to RCHM members and through Balance Healthcare to their customers, many of which are BAcC members. It also sets out in essence the Conservation Strategy for the Chinese Herb Garden.

Interpretation at the display garden was improved to highlight the need for Conservation. The creation of a separate Conservation bed at the garden was initiated although space is limited at the current site in the Botanic Gardens.

Contributions by Balance Healthcare have also been used for training in China. The Nanjing Botanic Garden is the oldest Botanic Garden in China with a long history of medicinal plant conservation. Funding for their work in this area is included in the Conservation Strategy. In late summer, Balance paid for a training programme for a botanist and other staff at Nanjing Botanic Gardens. The training was to enable wild plant tours for students at the University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Nanjing. This University receives several thousand students from over 40 countries a year. The tours to a local nature reserve to find wild herbs will raise revenue for the garden. Ecotourism is a growing tool in conservation.

Also in the field of student education, the undergraduate teaching course at the Bristol garden has been readjusted to include Conservation of Chinese Herbs. This will lead to a comprehensive Dispensary Handbook to cover Module 5 of the professional herbal training at colleges. Balance Healthcare will be active in the production of this handbook in the coming year.

The Balance Conservation sponsorship shows a heartfelt desire to contribute to the sustainability of the herbs that we use. Conservation is not just an idea promoted by the garden, but involves every one of us who sources and dispenses herbs. We all share in the responsibility to ensure that we are part of the solution, ad not the problem.

With this in mind, we have taken a closer look at the sources of herbs in our products. Although we have always been vigilant with respect to forbidden and CITES listed herbs, we are extending this attention to species which are not yet covered by legislation.

One such herb is Bei Mu. There are several varieties of Bei Mu. The most common in this country are Chuan Bei MU (Fritillary cirhossa) and Zhe Bei Mu (Fritillary verticillata). Acting on information from the Chinese Herb Garden, Chuan Bei Mu is collected mainly from the wild and is under severe threat due to over picking whilst Zhe Bei Mu is mainly cultivated on a sustainable basis.

We will be asking our suppliers to only use Zhi Bei Mu in our formula. Although this action is a drop in the ocean compared to the consumption of the herb, we believe that this is how Conservation works on an individual basis according to a desire to do what we are able to do. Balance Healthcare will continue its commitment to Conservation and do sponsorship through the Garden and you can be assured that our products will be adjusted as necessary to make allowance for the latest information and products, which allow sustainability as well as quality.

Experience the Classics....
..and Support the Conservation of Medicinal Herbs

Why and how?
Balance healthcare believe strongly in the conservation of medicinal herbs - which is why we have decided to donate 15p, per Balance Classics pot sold, to the University of Bristol Herb Garden. We view our involvement as a long-term commitment which should enable the charity to really develop their programme and make a significant impact on Medicinal herb conservation.

About the charity
The University of Bristol Chinese Herb Garden is a joint collaboration between the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM) and The University of Bristol Botanic Garden. It is also affiliated to Nanjing Botanical Gardens in China. Over 300 species of herb used in traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine are grown in the garden and associated nursery as well as a mature European Herb Garden situated adjacent to the new Chinese Herb Display Garden. This is the first comprehensive teaching garden of Chinese medicinal plants in Europe that will be used to serve three broad aims: - education, research and conservation.

RCHM Approved Supplier
balance healthcare are one of the first.......
balance healthcare has recently been awarded Approved Supplier Status by the RCHM – one of the first companies to gain such accreditation.

About the scheme
It is vital that RCHM members and the public can have confidence in the supply of herbs and herbal products. To this end the RCHM has set up a scheme which establishes standards of practice for suppliers, and which will be used as the basis of an independent audit. A company which meets certain critical standards and demonstrates commitment, where necessary, to implementing other standards in the future, will be accepted as an Approved Supplier.

Childhood Sleep Disorders
A study carried out....
...in Michigan, Pittsburgh and Stanford Universities has found that childhood inattention and hyperactivity disorders are strongly linked to snoring and other symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing, with 39% of hyperactive boys found to snore during sleep. The researchers suggest that treating children`s snoring and other night-time breathing problems could address some of the most common and challenging childhood behavioural issues. Acupuncture boosts fertility
A recent review found that acupuncture can reduce stress, increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalise menstruation. Since stress is known to adversley affect ovulation, it is logical that acupuncture would assist normal ovulation through the release of beta-endorphins. Indeed, recent studies have shown that women who combine acupuncture with IVF are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Also, Women who use acupuncture without any other fertility treatments were just as likely to conceive as those who used fertility drugs.
